Nashville, Tennessee Oct 8, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - Americana artist Luke Powers announces the release of his new album, POSTSOUTHERN, a Faulkner-inspired collection of songs exploring the Souths tangled history and enduring memory. An eighth-generation Tennessean, Powers draws on family stories and folklore in a region where, as Faulkner wrote, The past isnt dead. It isnt even past.
Luke began writing the songs as Confederate statues were being removed in the wake of George Floyds killing. Though a Southerner, he felt no ambivalence: his great-great-grandfather, Willis Powers, had fought for the Union and died in Andersonville Prison. As a long-time English professor at an HBCU, he also understood the complicated history these symbols carry. Reflecting on personal, family, and regional history, he created a song cycle about the Civil War and its aftermath.
POSTSOUTHERN tells stories about a past that refuses to fade.

Confederama recalls a school trip to a once-glamorized roadside attraction.
The Wildman of Waldens Ridge draws on Signal Mountain folklore of a hermit who ran away from the war.

Blending folk, country, blues, and rock, POSTSOUTHERN features the late multi-instrumentalist Tommy Spurlock (The Band, Emmylou Harris, Leon Russell, Rodney Crowell, David Olney). Tommys Got a Mule spins a mostly true tale about Spurlock himself.
I wanted to make an album like a Faulkner novel one that honors the Souths heritage while confronting its troubled history, says Powers. Each song on POSTSOUTHERN tells a story about a place where the past isnt past but maybe should be.
POSTSOUTHERN is available now on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and all major streaming platforms. Listen to Luke Powers POSTSOUTHERN
